This spell identifies the metals comprising a given alloy. If the caster holds or otherwise firmly touches the metallic substance in question, he can identify the component metals involved at a rate of 1 metal for every 3 levels of the caster (rounded down). Therefore, to identify the components of Dwarven Steel, the caster would need to be at least 9th level, for there are three metallic ingredients - steel, gold, and white mithral. Note that this spell will never return information on gem powders or other non-metallic ingredients added to the alloy.

The material component, in addition to the metal (which is not consumed), is 100 GP worth of crushed gems, colored red, blue, and yellow (in any amounts). The crushed gems are thrown on the object in question during the casting and are thus consumed. If the caster uses green emerald powder (of at least 100 GP) in addition to the above crushed gems, he will also know the order of the metals, from largest to smallest. Since Dwarven Steel has more steel than gold and more gold than white mithral, the answer would be "Steel, Gold, White Mithral."
